Measurements: approx 208cm x 34cm + 6cm fringe (82” x 13” + 2″ fringe)
I have woven this scarf in a 40/2 pure linen thread that is spun and naturally dyed in Bengal India. Both these colours are dyed with Kasheem and the lighter fawn also uses Gallnuts in the dye process. (see below.)
The design of this scarf starts with finer black stripes at either end, then thicker stripes in the middle.
Linen feels softer and softer the more it is worn. This is a perfect scarf for those who can’t wear wool or live in warmer climates. Because of the fineness of the thread it is very sheer and light.
It is also a very sustainable fibre and biodegradable.
To protect the natural dyes you absolutely must use a pH neutral liquid detergent.
Kasheem is iron water using a traditional recipe of fermenting scrap iron, date palm sugar and chickpea flour. It reacts with tannins to create greys & blacks.
Gallnut (Oak Gall) is used to mordant cellulose fibers and fabrics before an alum mordant. Gallnuts from oak trees are a rich source of natural clear tannin. A gallnut is produced by oak trees as a defense against parasitic wasps who deposit their eggs in small punctures they make on young branches. The tree excretes a tannin-rich substance that hardens and forms a gallnut. These are collected and ground to be used in dyeing.
I am temporarily not selling through the website, however if you wish to buy a piece of my weaving or any of my hand dyed yarn please email me directly through the contact page. I will get back to you as soon as possible to arrange your purchase.
