A large part of the weaving work I do is customer orders. It is impossible to have a full range of colours in every item and often a customer will want a certain colour or colourway to match an outfit or furniture. It really does mean designing a piece right there and then with the customer and that is a hugely enjoyable part of my work.
This throw rug was made for a customer who wanted a special wedding present for a couple. One of the good things about making to order is I end up weaving a piece in colours I wouldn’t normally do, it takes me out of my comfort zone.
Another part of the work I do is contract weave to a South Island based yarn company. I first started weaving for Touch Yarns nearly 18 years ago, mainly making pieces for instore displays and over the years these have gone to outlets all over New Zealand, Australia and America. They have also been used on trade stands in these countries and England.
I now mainly weave for their own store and this bright citrus throw rug is one that I have just done for them.
It has been a very long and enjoyable relationship and together we have designed some wonderful pieces.
